See what I mean about not very picturesque. These mud flats created by the tides draw tourists to it like flies to 'you-know-what'. Every year emergency service personnel rescue dozens of tourists who wander on to the flats and get stuck in the mud and have to get extricated before the tide comes in.

View of the observation decks at the lodge. This is where you go to not see the mountain. Oh, did I tell you that chances of seeing the mountain peak are about 20%? Most of the time only about 45% of the mountain is visible at all. Wonder why this isn't mentioned in the travel brochures? Wait, don't answer that, I think I know.

Ahh, "the mountain". If you use your imagination a bit, you can sort of see the peak just behind the clouds. Apparently, the mountain is so high that it generates its own weather so even on beautiful, sunny days when everything else is visible all around it, "the mountain" will be shrouded in clouds.

Snapped this one through the bus window (tinted). Some entrepreneur had visions of a motel shaped like an igloo in the heart of Alaska until government building inspectors shut him down for silly things like not meeting building codes for electrical and plumbing. Well, the money finally ran out, the building sat for a number of years till one of the oil companies there bought it and are bringing it up to code with the intention of opening it for business.

Our cruise was with Princess Cruise Lines. We spent three days on land in Alaska before the cruise. We flew Winnipeg-Vancouver-Anchorage, Alaska. From Anchorage we took the train to Talkeetna, stayed overnight, then by motor coach (fancy bus) to Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, stayed overnight, then a 10 1/2 train journey back south to Whittier to board the ship. Our cruise south to Vancouver poked into a lot of fjords and bays to view glaciers and visit various ports.

This is the observation area along the Nanana River behind the lodge. The "great one" is not visible from here. One must go into Denali National Park on a ranger led tour to see it. That is, if it isn't cloudy and raining, which it was when we were there.

If it wasn't raining you'd be able to see "the great one" off in the distance. All you can see here is Alaska tundra. And why are these two people smiling? Well, it was humorous at the time because when our ranger-led tour bus arrived here in the pouring rain and asked if anyone wanted to step outside for a look before heading back, only three people (us) left the bus. We could hear the grumbling behind us as we went outside.

This fjord has dozens of glaciers, mostly named after elite American colleges. From one location in the fjord you can see eight glaciers at once. We were cruising through the area at 5 AM so it was an early wake-up call for those who chose to do so.
